From the 13th July CMM will move carefully forward from the recent restrictions to open up and receive research projects from new clients. To do this, we have implemented new lab operating procedures based on our staff and client's health and welfare, coupled with government guidelines.

As the COVID-19 situation has developed, CMM has been engaged in various preparation initiatives, such as operating with reduced staff on site and keeping essential services running to allow our current clients to keep doing their work in the labs.

Together with the Protein Expression Facility (PEF) we took recently delivery of a Refeyn mass-photometry system that is currently located in the newly refurbished QBP CryoEM facility. The Refeyn OneMP system applies the principle of interference reflection microscopy and interferometric scattering microscopy to quantify light scattered by a single molecule on a glass surface.

Laser Microdissection (LMD, also known as Laser Capture Microdissection or LCM) enables users to isolate specific single cells or entire areas of tissue. Powered by a unique laser design and dynamic software, Leica LMD systems allow users to easily isolate Regions of Interest (ROI) from entire areas of tissue down to single cells or even subcellular structures such as chromosomes.

CMM has currently stopped accepting any new projects due to the Covid-19 situation. In exceptional circumstances, projects fitting one of the critical research criteria might be considered if resources are available.

As the COVID-19 situation develops, UQ’s Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) has been engaged in various preparation initiatives, such as working from home if required and keeping essential services running.

A research team led by Professor Lianzhou Wang has set a world record for the conversion of solar energy to electricity via the use of nanoparticles called ‘quantum dots’.

The Australian Research Council and National Health & Medical Research Council provide grants to academic researchers. A correct and final grant budget requires instrument time, material preparation and support staff fees. To help you calculate these project-related costs, Microscopy Australia has provided a Grant Application Guide and online tools to calculate these costs and justify your chosen technique, instrument and location.

Please join us in celebrating the work and contributions of Dr Barry Wood at The University of Queensland over the past 50 years. Barry joined UQ on the 1st December 1969 and will retire at the end of 2019.

The Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis Client Forum provides the chance for all researchers to network and to learn about the breadth of research facilitated by CMM over the past year. It is for both current clients of CMM and those who want to find out more about what CMM does or could do for them.

Taking place on 20 September, the research capabilities showcase is a unique event where UQ research capabilities showcase their leading-edge research initiatives, services and impacts.

To enhance the fundamental knowledge for CMM TEM users, particularly for those users working on Solid Materials, a series of Advanced TEM/STEM lectures will be presented by Professor Jin Zou and Professor Roger Wepf.
