Cryo TEM Flagship Scientist: Full Time - Fixed Term

About this opportunity:
You will be responsible to manage, plan, maintain and operate the cryo transmission electron microscopes and cryo FIB/SEM, which are located in the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) in a small team. The role involves a number of aspects including the training of new users in the proper and effective usage of the instrumentation, in the preparation of sample specimens for cryo-electron microscopy; the production of high-quality images and the development of new workflows for single-particle reconstruction and cryo-electron tomography. You will develop new workflows and protocols for cryo TEM tomography and CLEM and analytical methods related to modern structural biology challenges. In addition, aiding clients in experimental design and in the interpretation of high-quality data will be a highly significant aspect of the position.
For US applicants, please note that Australian Universities use British terminology, as such a Lecturer position is equivalent to that of a non-tenured Assistant Professor position in the US.
Our ideal candidate
For appointment level A:
Applicants should either possess or currently be working towards a PhD in structural biology, biochemistry, bio engineering or related fields.
You should have demonstrated expertise in handling samples, using microscopes and evaluating data as well as have understanding of the principles of transmission electron microscopy and cryo-vacuum technology. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
For appointment level B - in addition to the above:
Applicants should possess a PhD in structural biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related fields plus two years of cryo-EM experience.
You should have a solid understanding of the principles of transmission electron microscopy and cryo-vacuum technology, experience with recent software used in the CryoEM workflows for single-particle reconstruction and cryo-electron tomography as well as experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.
In addition you should have demonstrated training and teaching skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop co-operative research initiatives and evidence of a contribution to research, including successful external grant applications.
What we can offer:
This is a full-time fixed term position for up to three years at Academic level A/B – Depending on the successful candidate’s experience.
For appointment at Academic Level A the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $80,575 - $92,782, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $94,272 - $108,555.
For appointment at Academic Level B the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $97,590 - $115,888, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $114,181 - $135,590.
