We welcome you to our 2018 Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis Annual Report. We hope you enjoy reading this report and the highlighted research projects.

The Thermo Fisher Apreo is a high resolution FESEM capable of operating in low vacuum conditions.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 1 February 2019 between The University of Queensland (UQ) Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Central Analytical Research Facility (CARF). The CMM-CARF MoU facilitates easy movement for staff and clients at both institutions by promoting exchange of expertise and enhanced know-how for optimum research outcomes.

Protein Australia brings together scientists from academia and industry to contribute to the development of protein science and protein technology. From the 16th to 18th July 2019. Registration closes on 1st July 2019. Early bird registration until 31st May 2019.

A seminar and special classroom lecture on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), presented by Dr Pierre Panine. Pierre is an instrument scientist with Xenocs, manufacturers of the Xeuss 2.0 laboratory beamline recently installed at the CMM, and has extensive scattering experience, including time as a beamline scientist at the ESRF.

During his time with us, Pierre will give a general introduction to SAXS together with some examples from his own research on Tuesday, and then will present a classroom session on more detailed theory and practice of small-angle X-ray scattering on Wednesday morning. We encourage anyone with an interest in scattering to attend and learn from his experience.

A gathering of microanalysis, microscopy and spectroscopy experts. This is a fantastic opportunity to speak with the experts, learn about their latest developments and have techniques utilising the latest hardware and software explained.

Liquid phase synthesis is a powerful method for the formation of uniform sized nanoparticles and nanoparticles with a faceted morphology. General strategies for the formation of nanoparticles and through chemical synthesis will be outlined. The results presented will include the formation of catalytic metals such branched nanostructures of gold, palladium and ruthenium.

The 2018 CMM User Forum provides the chance for researchers to network and to learn about the breadth of research facilitated by CMM over the past year from its clients. It also provides a great opportunity to see what is new or planned for the facility and to provide input for future planning.

In this seminar, Dr William Rickard, Associate Deputy Director, John de Laeter Centre, Curtin University, will present applications of FIB-SEM based ToF-SIMS and demonstrate how it can be used in correlative studies involving TEM and APT.
