Join the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) as a Senior X-ray Scientist and provide specialist scientific and technical research expertise to diverse projects and initiatives. In this role, you will operate advanced and complex instrumentation, develop new methods, and work with a diverse range of specimen types.

CMM operates world-class facilities with cutting-edge instruments and techniques for imaging and spectroscopy, providing advanced materials characterisation and expert training across various disciplines at The University of Queensland.

Our X-ray Spectroscopy and Particle Characterisation Laboratory houses a variety of X-ray instruments. You will use, and train clients, on these instruments, with a focus on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM). You will also design SAXS experiments for clients and assist them in accessing the Australian Synchrotron. Additionally, you will be integral in enhancing our data analysis capabilities in SAXS and XFM, further strengthening our expertise and services.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide comprehensive training, support, and guidance to clients and staff on using X-ray instruments within CMM, including developing and delivering workshops, seminars, and lab tours.
  • Offer high-level scientific and technical expertise, conducting measurements, and managing client projects to ensure safety, competency, and compliance with ISO9001 standards.
  • Oversee the care, upkeep, calibration, and maintenance of scientific instrumentation, ensuring the proper and efficient use of the equipment.
  • Conduct experimental design, data collection, analysis, and reporting, and effectively communicate research results to clients and the scientific community.
  • Assist in daily operations, develop risk assessments and SOPs, participate in grant proposals, and comply with CMM OHS procedures and administrative tasks.

About you

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior X-ray Scientist to leverage their deep expertise in X-ray analysis and sample preparation techniques.

  • A PhD in Analytical or Inorganic Chemistry with subsequent experience in X-ray spectroscopy and Surface Analysis techniques.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in using SAXS and proficiency in one or more of: XFM, XRD, XPS.
  • Experience using SASView and GeoPIXI for data analysis
  • Scientific curiosity and eagerness to learn new techniques, with the ability to train others and share knowledge with peers
  • Evidence of teaching ability and supporting clients.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clients by telephone, email and in person or liaise with other staff members.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to write logical and concise operational procedures.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • A sound knowledge of rules and procedures for operating a safe laboratory environment at UQ (as per UQ’s Policies and Procedures Library (PPL)).
