About this opportunity

The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to the design and development of automated and semi-automated tools to control analytical instruments and high precision sample manipulation systems with the aim to improve material characterisation techniques in use at CMM and Microscopy Australia.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Design control software targeting the integration of diverse devices in a local network.

  • Write wrappers for different components in a suitable programming language to integrate components in a modular fashion.

  • Design for intuitive/ easy to use “User Interfaces” to operate prototypes and integrate them into existing analytical workflows/instrument.

  • Archive technical documentation.

  • Collect and manage users test experiences.

  • Establish testing environments and monitor systems.

  • Maintain R&D repositories ensuring compliance with established guidelines

  • Maintain interdisciplinary collaboration among staff and vendors involved in R&D.

  • Troubleshoot novel automated prototypes and apply iterative design principles to identify changes and revisions to designs. Focus on failure avoidance and performance improvement.

Other duties include:

  • Contribute to the innovation of the relevant technologies for our application fields.

  • Maintain and develop good relationships with our strategic suppliers, co-developers and manufacturing partners.

  • Engage with the Microscopy Australia network, including the technology development engineer positions around Australia, along with National Imaging Facility (NIF) and ANSTO.

  • Develop close relationships with part suppliers to adequately resolve technical conflicts.

  • Ensure that activities are carried out according to the principle of “user focus” and ease of use principles

  • Any additional duties as assigned by the Director and in line with the character of the Position Description

About you

Essential

  • University degree in a Robotics related technical discipline, or a combination of relevant education and experience. The position also requires more than 2 years of work experience in a R&D or industrial robotics engineering environment.

  • Extensive knowledge of automation and robotic control tools and software packages (ROS, PLC, Tango, etc) as well systems integration.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of common analog and digital circuits and schematics and computer control hardware layout and integration.

  • Ability to create technical documentation and engineering reports using common Microsoft Office and Acrobat applications, including proficiency in in Microsoft Excel as a scientific tool.

  • Programming skills in a major programming language or scripting language (C++, Python, Java, Matlab, LabView, etc.), and demonstrated ability to work with, and understand mechanical drawings and models.

  • Ability to plan and resolve issues that involve gaining cooperation of cross-functional, multi-cultural groups and sites without damaging relationships.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including to ability to present to wider project proposals, technical reports or other content to wider audiences. 

Desirable

  • Expertise in the design of electronic circuits.

  • Expertise in Virtual-Reality and its applications for systems control.

  • Experience with SerialEM and microscope control.

  • Experience in robotics for high precision manipulation.

  • knowledge in Microscopy and/or Microanalysis.

What we can offer

This is a full time, fixed term position at HEW level 6. 

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $80,784 to $86,768 plus superannuation of up to 17% .
