A high pressure freezer is used to freeze living cells and tissues with liquid nitrogen under a pressure of 2100bar to avoid the build-up of damaging ice crystals. This so-called vitrification process of biological samples is a prerequisite for a subsequent high quality TEM sample preparation. The EMPact has a rapid transfer system (RTS) to allow critical time experiments to be conducted.
