The Thermofisher Apreo field emission gun (FEG) scanning electron microscope is equipped with three energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detectors, Esprit EDS analysis software, and Maps Min automated mineralogy software. A complex lens system of the electron gun allows imaging in variable modes, beneficial for detailed surface characterisation in natural and man-made materials. Maps Min software allows simultaneous acquisition and visualisation of elemental and phase maps, which may be useful in characterisation of minerals and other materials with low fraction phase and significant inhomogeneity of chemical composition.
