About this opportunity:

The Mechanical/Electrical Technician, locally known as Support Service Unit Officer, reports to the Centre Manager of CMM. This role provides timely instrument support to keep the $48M scientific equipment of CMM (electron microscopes, X-ray equipment, and ancillary equipment) operational, along with the installation and maintenance of the various other support instruments (chillers, pumps etc.). You will use your mechanical, electrical, and electronic expertise well and get challenged. You may also help design and develop adjustments/instrument parts to help improve microscopy and material characterization techniques used at CMM.

The tasks associated with this position are very varied, and there will be plenty of opportunity to develop further expertise in your field of interest.

Our ideal candidate:

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Technician with a strong interest in scientific mechanical, and electronic equipment. In addition, the successful candidate will have significant expertise in mechanical, electronic & electrical maintenance/repairs of highly specialised equipment.

  • Diploma/Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or Electronics and at least 4 years relevant work experience.  Candidates must have a Queensland open Driver’s Licence (no P plates).  A Queensland Electrical Licence would be highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated competence in using hand and power tools and electrical test equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with:
    • Common analog and digital circuits and schematics; as well as knowledge of vacuum technology and ideally cryo-technology (liquid Nitrogen use and cryo-vacuum technologies etc.)
    • Electrical and electronic repair of complex instrumentation.
    • Servicing and/or standard repairs of equipment such as vacuum systems, water pumps, water chillers, air compressors and compressed gasses services.
    • Test equipment, like multi-meters, oscilloscopes, pressure sensors, and mass flow controllers, digital data acquisitionInstallation, configuration and repair of computer system hardware involving a wide range of PC and Server systems. (Microsoft – including obsolete versions such as NT4 and Windows 2000, Linux and MacOS)Demonstrated experience with TCP/IP networking.
    • Ability to create technical documentation and engineering reports using common Microsoft Office, Visio/Cad, Solidworks, Microsoft Excel as a scientific tool and Acrobat applications
    • Ideally, programming skills in a major programming language or scripting language (C++, Java, Matlab, Labview); and demonstrated ability to work with and understand mechanical drawings and models.

What we can offer:

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW Level 7.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $90,538 - $98,719 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $105,929 - $115,501 per annum.
