Researcher biography

Dr Alexander Fink graduated with a Diplom-Ing (FH) in Applied Physics from the University of Applied Science NTA in Insy, Germany before commencing a Ph.D. in Physics at the Centre for Material and Surface Sciences (CMSS), La Trobe University in Melbourne.

During his PhD, Alexander conducted an extensive study in the composition, structure and origin of Lightning Ridge Black Opal using a wide range of methods. These methods extended to X-ray and IR spectroscopy, Synchrotron and X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Radiocarbon dating and electron microscopy.  

In 2008, Alexander took on the role as Manager for the electron microscopy facility and the X-ray laboratory. In this role, Alexander supported researchers, students, and commercial clients from a broad array of disciplines, providing research services, training, and support.

Following his experience at La Trobe University, Alexander commenced further studies and graduated with a Master of Business Administration and Master of Marketing from Melbourne Business School.

After returning to Germany in 2017, Alexander joined Gatan GmbH, a leading manufacturer for accessory equipment in electron microscopy, where he led the Gatan’s service division covering the region of Central Europe, Middle East and India.

Alexander joined CMM in January 2022 as Manager for the X-ray Material Science and Spectroscopy laboratory to support CMM initiative in providing state of the art research and educational services in X-ray sciences and spectroscopy.
